Just One More Time: Senior actresses Lilian Adams and Jackielou Bolanos narrate and act out the final scene of Act One of Into The Woods. With the first show night nearing, the actors and technical team worked diligently to run the show one more time to perfect all the scenes of the play. I’m filled with excitement and nerves as we near the first show night. I’m privileged to be part of this production and I eagerly await our final, awe-inspiring night, said Bolanos.

From Chaos Comes Clarity: Actors Camilla Haro, Andrew Gonzalez, and Julianna Irizarry rehearse Act Two of Into the Woods. They go over their scenes multiple times as they make tiny mistakes that they are trying to perfect before moving on. Senior secretary and actress Julianna Irizarry says, “The blocking process has been very chaotic but overall I’m having a lot of fun.”

Speed Running It: Director Ryan, Junior Camilla Haro, and Sophomore Georgio Tahtouh go over the blocking of a specific scene. They are trying to clarify the blocking of a scene Haro and Tahouh are featuring in before all cadre actors attempt a group dance. “In theatre, to know where we need to stand on the stage, we do this thing called blocking. However, in dire times, we have to speed run them when we need more clarification,” said Sophomore actor and technician Gerogio Tahtouh.

Cadre Crews Taking Action: Actors and light crew members block the stage. Actors are reading through the script, figuring out where they should be at a specific line, while the light crew is installing lights and directing them on where they should shine at a specific time. Lead actor Camila Haro states, “Blocking has been very exciting and eventful. It’s making me look forward to the final production.”

Progressing For Impressing: Cadre members sing along with music director, Mr. Yeakley. They are going over the first music piece of the play, Into the Woods, which is 14 minutes long. Cadre actor and costume crew member Olivia Nguyen says, “Mr. Yeakley has been such a fun and uplifting addition to our Cadre family. He always knows how to crack a joke and provide help when needed.”

First Speech As President: Ianna Walker, the new president of Cadre, gives her first speech over the project she wishes to make and sets her goal for next year. Because the UIL members all have the freedom to choose what they want to work on for their final project, some wished to announce it to the whole class. “I choose to do a monologue for my final project because I want to go out of my comfort zone. I haven’t really explored dramatic scripts, and dramatic acting is something I want to make stronger for next year,” Walker said.

Sweeping Instead Of Greeting: UIL sweeps each center, acting out skits of SNN, the play Smile Nd Nod. Right after the skit is finished, they brief the audience about when and where the actual performance will take place. Freshman actor Georgio Tahtouh said, Smile Nd Nod is different from the other shows we did before because we get to incorporate ourselves into it. It really brings everyone together. There are so many jokes that everyone is able to understand.

Term Coming To An End: UIL presents all of the officer candidates for next year. Every candidate shares why UIL members should vote for them followed by an interview from the current officers. Junior co stage manager Lillian Adams said “I’m excited to see what I can put into an officer role and what I can do better for this club.”

Resuming Costuming: UIL members make costumes out of scratch for their play Smile Nd Nod. Though some costumes look rough in the making, most UIL members believe in trusting the process. Sophomore actress and cadre thespian Olivia Nguyen said, I joined costumes to learn how to use a sewing machine although the costumes I made looked rough at first. However, Im still excited because I know theyre going to look good at the end.

Partitioning When Auditioning: UIL members who are auditioning for Smile Nd Nod practice their lines with each other. All members who wish to audition break up into small groups or separate to practice alone before auditioning in front of the directors. Junior UIL company member Andrew Gonzales said, “the writing process was really fun since we are going to go through different worlds and explore all of these ventures as it’s over with. Now that we’re actually auditioning for the scenes, it’s really interesting to see the plotline of the play from the actors perspective rather than the writers perspective.”

2023’s Last Push: UIL members gather around finalizing their script Smile Nd Nod. Each member has the script open on a device adding any necessary changes as the script is being read out loud. Freshman costume crew member and alternate actress Erica Carranza says, “the Smile Nd Nod writing process is by design very collaborative, that’s probably the best part. Of course it comes with its challenges, but ultimately it means a play that everyone had a little part of.”

Sweeping For Upkeeping: UIL actors and actresses sweep a snippet of Imaginary Invalid during fourth period. After going around each center and performing their snippet of the play, Imaginary Invalid, managers share information about the plays full performance. Freshman actor Moises Zuniga says, “It feels amazing to go out dressed in costumes completely made by us and amplify our voices and put into perspective to audiences what dedication we have to what we do.

THE LAST CUT: UIL members rework specific scenes trying to perfect them for their district competition. The technicians are also helping the actors and watching the individual scenes to find minor imperfections the directors didn’t catch. Senior actor Chriss Doradea said, “In UIL, we are striving towards competition, and we push ourselves. We’re constantly working hard. During moments like these, we can gather as an ensemble and just have fun.”

Pushing Through For The Final Reveal: All UIL members, like Junior Jackielou Bolanos, move set pieces for setup. UIL makes every effort to push through one more time in order to produce the greatest outcome they can given the impending competition. Jackielou said, “I’m thrilled but also anxious [for the competition] since I’m showcasing high fashion from the French Neoclassicism Renaissance.”

On A Crunch: Seniors actor Chriss Doradea and actress Kathy Nguyen work on their scenes altering them for their whole play to fit a 40-minute time limit. They further discuss the lazzis, comedic parts, they wish to add to their scenes. “Thanks to the suggestions we got, we are now able to improve things we forgot about or didn’t pay much attention to,” Chriss Doradea said.

Spreading Comforting Words: All UIL Cadre members sit in a circle getting ready to participate in the exchange of affirmation notecards. If a person wanted to read the affirmation notecard out loud that they had handwritten, they would stand in the middle of the circle, read their notecard, then gives it to the person they directed the words too. After this activity, Jason Quach stated, “I was feeling so humble and loved by all of the kind words that the students said to me and to each other with this exercise. It felt so good to see each student lift each other up and make those connections with each other.”

It’s A Set-Up: All UIL Cadre members start blocking for class play “Imaginary Invalid”. Picking up insights, Masoud states, “Overall, I feel like it’s a very fun play, different from what we normally do, so I’m ambitious and excited to start on it. DRESS FOR SUCCESS, Erica Carranza and Leah Ghebrelul, freshmen Cadre ensemble members, get ready for the first dress rehearsal of the show “Orange”. The shows actors get 30 minutes to get ready and put on their costumes, in which most either set a timer or trust the process during this period. Carranza states “Overall I’ve felt confident since the beginning, not because we started off like so amazing, but because I just decided to trust the process. I’m actually really excited to see how well we can pull off our quick changes as well as choreography.
