Nyla Whiteside and Leah Ghebrelul pose for a picture with their awards from Districts. After competing at regions, they both hope to advance to the state level next year. “It sucks that we didn’t make it, but I’m glad we tried,” Ghebrelul said.

On April 27, all competitors that qualified in District UIL at Dawson High School moved on to compete in Regions at Seven Lakes High School. Qualifiers included Nyla Whiteside placing 1 in persuasive speaking, Leah Ghebrelul placing 2 in persuasive speaking, Erica Carranza placing 3 in persuasive speaking, Rebecca Oyeniyi placing 2 in informative speaking, and Shalom Akinkunmi placing 3 in informative speaking. Upon arrival to regions, all exempt competitors immediately left for their rooms, with rounds starting as early as 8 AM. Despite great efforts, there were no advancements to the state level. Members hope to try again next year for better results.
