From the Top Abigail Nguyen runs through her Lincoln Douglas speech during speech and debate’s afterschool meeting to prepare for UIL the coming Saturday. When writing her cases, she finds it helpful to read them as she goes. “I’m very excited to compete,” said Nguyen.

On April 2, speech and debate members gathered after school in room 523 until 4 PM to prepare for UIL on Saturday, April 6. With entries in both extemporaneous speaking and Lincoln Douglas debate, competitors needed to prepare diligently for the tournament. Unlike the typical TFA circuit, no timers are allowed when speaking and all speeches must strictly abide by the time limit, or else face disqualification. To prepare for this, extemp speakers gave practice speeches to Coach Davis alongside the other members to receive critiques and feedback. With only a few days left till competition, the stakes are undoubtedly high.
