Kerronicle designer wins top award for computer art

Some of the medals earned by Kerr journalism students.

Kerronicle graphic designer Kevin Nguyen received the “Tops in Texas” award in Computer Art at the Interscholastic League Press Conference Spring Convention this weekend in Austin.

Nguyen received first place in the 5A-1 division at the convention, and his artwork, which was featured in Kerronicle this fall, was chosen as the top entry among the first place winners in all eight divisions.

ILPC, the journalism branch of the University Interscholastic League, recognizes work published in student publications with Individual Achievement Awards in writing, design and photography categories. For the first time, Kerr competed in the 5A division.

In print newspaper categories, Alyssa Andaverde received honorable mention in sports feature. Hadiqa Memon received honorable mention in entertainment page design. Rebecca Negri, Tuong-Phi Le and Nadia Zulfa received honorable mention for caption writing, and the staff received honorable mention for headline writing.

In online newspaper, Le earned second place in personal opinion column, Nguyen received honorable mention in entertainment review, Andaverde received honorable mention in sports column and in computer art, and Memon received honorable mention in cartoon.

In 2012 yearbook, which competed in the 4A division based on last year’s classification, Negri earned second place in sports feature photo, Cindy Lei earned second place in club photo and third place in academic photo, Andrea Nguyen earned second place in student life feature story, Sue Tecson earned honorable mention in student life spread and Sarah Tran earned honorable mention in academic spread.

In 2013 yearbook, 5A division, Jun Tan and Maithy Tran earned second place in student life spread, and Meera Norton, Cindy Cheema, Christina Huynh and Tran earned honorable mention in academic spread.
