Q&A with Kathleen Harrison

Question: What do you like to do in your leisure time?

Answer: I like to spend time with family and friends and read.

Q: Who would you like to be for a day and why?

A: I would like to be Trump so I could undo all the cr*p he’s done.

Q: What skill would you like to learn?

A: I’d love to dance like Jennifer Lopez back when she was a fly girl on the show In Living Color.

Q: What is your favorite type of music?

A: I love Bruno Mars and Maroon 5, so I guess that means I like pop.

Q: Who or what inspired you to become a teacher?

A: My father. He was a high school band director and had an incredible rapport with his students, not to mention over 30 years of UIL sweepstakes, so he was an incredible role model for my career and for being a good human being in general.

Q: What do you enjoy most about being a teacher?

A: I love my kids! They are never ever boring or predictable and usually amusing and downright inspiring. And every single day I get the chance to help someone and maybe make a difference. That’s a true gift for which I am unabashedly grateful every day.

Q: Why did you decide to pursue teaching English?

A: Some days I wonder. I’ve always been a voracious reader and an intense thinker, so it’s natural that I’d go into English. I enjoy writing, but the teaching and grading of student writing can be downright daunting and overwhelming at times. If I could discuss literature every day, I’d think I was in heaven already.
Q: Would you prefer to remain teaching in the United States or would you want to move to another country and teach there?

A: If I was younger, I’d seriously look into teaching abroad, but I’ve got a grand baby coming in June, so I’m staying put.

Q: Do you plan on pursuing a new career in the future?

A: Nope, but it might be fun being a Starbucks barista.

Q: Did you have a different career aspiration during your childhood?

A: At one point I looked into speech pathology, but not for long.
