Speech and Debate Practices for Cities

Speaking Up Sophomore Leah Ghebrelul practices her fluency and articulation during an after school debate meeting in room 531. As a fourth year debater, using drills to perfect her speaking style is advantageous in competitions. “I like to practice from the basics because it allows me to remember crucial skills,” Ghebrelul said.

On February 20, speech and debate members met after school in the debate room to hold practice impromptu rounds before city championships on March 2. World Schools competitors debated one another in room 531 after hearing general club notes in the debate room. On the other hand, Congress entries prepared for National Qualifiers in room 411. With another general meeting coming up on Thursday, debaters continue to prepare for their tournaments.

Dat Nguyen, Haniyah Lutfi, and Alan Parra pose with their first, second, and third place trophies at City Qualifiers. All of these debaters were competing in varsity congress. "For my city qualifiers tournament, I found it very fun and unique from others. I think that CASE tournaments allowed for all the congressional debaters to bond with eachother, and so rather than feeling you did bad after rounds, you felt like you had a group supporting your back! Overall it was very fun," Nguyen said.

Heads in the Kahoots! Dylan Nguyen and Alexander Nguyen plan an intense Kahoot battle with their NTLB group. They worked together in the February mixer. "The February Kahoot game was very fun this time around," Nguyen said.

A Tourist At Home: Meerab Arif takes photos of Franzi Desai, Iqra Naveed, Sarah Tahtouh, and Tanisha Patel. They dressed up as tourists for 'Dress Up As A Tourist' Tuesday. "It's fun dressing up, so I'm trying to do it throughout the week," Arif said.
Desi Club Hosts Dress Up Week
Strength in Struggles: Motivational speaker Tory Gant speaks on stage. He presented making healthy life choices. "Make choices you want to look like," Grant said.
Sophomores Attend YES Presentation
Staying Updated: Officers present upcoming events with important information. They used four different QR codes that seniors can scan to fill out and sign-up. "It is mandatory that you sign-up for Remind," Isabella Le said.
Senior Officers Discuss Events
Heart In Hand: Jenny Tran, Jessica Nguyen, and Kamie Le make heart crystals. The hearts were made out of borax and members were allowed to keep them if they wanted to. "Making the crystals felt like I was back in elementary doing simple experiments," Le said.
