Kerr’s Chess club checkmates the competition

Chess Club swept the competition at the Alief District Chess Tournament January 29 with the first place trophy.

“I felt that we had a strong team and the results shows that,” club sponsor Steven Bolting said.

This year’s tournament was more entertaining for competitors, according to sophomore Adam A.

“We had more schools, students and better competition this year,” he said.

The competition gotten even more intense when the chess club found out that Elsik had a Cuban National Chess Champion on their team.

 “His name was Roberto Suarez and he was unbeatable,” said Edwin C, president of the chess club, “but I would’ve beaten him if I went first.”

For Individual rankings: Patten H. got 1st place, Tony L. 3rd made 3rd place, Jim L. earned 4th place, Tu T. received 5th, Jonathan N. got 7th place.

For Team rankings, Kerr’s chess team (Adam A., Edwin C., Kenneth H. and Jake L.) made 1st place.
