AP vs Dual Credit

It’s a question that hangs in almost every student’s head: dual credit or AP classes? Both allow students to receive college credit and experience collegelevel work, but deciding which route to take can be difficult.

Dual Credit

  • Credit not accepted at some public and private universities.
  • Fewer college credits to pay for in the future.
  • Class taken online or on a college campus.
  • Tuition is free, but may have to pay for textbooks.
  • College level-work.
  • Courses usually restricted to juniors and seniors.
  • A ‘C’ or higher required  to receive  credit.
  • Requires students to meet admission requirements.

Advanced Placement

  • Credit accepted at most public or private universities.
  • Fewer college credits to pay for in the future.
  • Class taken at high school.
  • Class is free, but must pay for each AP test.
  • College level-work.
  • Courses primarily for juniors and seniors, but not restricted.
  • A 3 or higher on the AP exam required to receive credit.
  • Eligibility to win scholarships and awards.
  • Perception of some colleges that AP courses are more prestigious.
  • Level of work is more rigorous than in regular high school courses.
