It’s a question that hangs in almost every student’s head: dual credit or AP classes? Both allow students to receive college credit and experience college–level work, but deciding which route to take can be difficult.
Dual Credit
- Credit not accepted at some public and private universities.
- Fewer college credits to pay for in the future.
- Class taken online or on a college campus.
- Tuition is free, but may have to pay for textbooks.
- College level-work.
- Courses usually restricted to juniors and seniors.
- A ‘C’ or higher required to receive credit.
- Requires students to meet admission requirements.
Advanced Placement
- Credit accepted at most public or private universities.
- Fewer college credits to pay for in the future.
- Class taken at high school.
- Class is free, but must pay for each AP test.
- College level-work.
- Courses primarily for juniors and seniors, but not restricted.
- A 3 or higher on the AP exam required to receive credit.
- Eligibility to win scholarships and awards.
- Perception of some colleges that AP courses are more prestigious.
- Level of work is more rigorous than in regular high school courses.
