Although a lot of music this year has been makeshift dance tutorials, more songs this year revolved around the concepts of home life and self empowerment. Those themes are apparent in the music of Fantasia Monique Barrino, simply known as Fantasia to her fans, and she is one of the chart topping artists of 2010. She released her third album Back To Me on August 24, and this album by far is my favorite of the year.
Her new album Back To Me made me feel enlightened and I was lost in its lyrical content. Songs like “I’m Doin’ Me” tell the story of a woman liberating herself from her boyfriend. Instead of worrying about him she decides to focus on herself. It resonated with me because I feel like I need to not worry about what other people are into, and worry about myself. “Even Angels” has a beautiful melody even without the words. What I understood from the song was that it is okay to learn different things and don’t be afraid to seek what you want because, “…even angels learn how to fly.”
I think that this album in comparison to her second, “Fantasia”, showcased the raw talent and powerful voice that she has. While her second album tried to be more urban, which in my opinion is not the right sound to accompany her voice, this one slowed down and let her natural sounds flow. It did exactly what the title said: it went back to her.
