On Saturday, February 15, speech and debate students left for Sterling High School at 6:30 PM to compete at the city qualifying tournament for CASE. Catherine Nneji took first place in junior varsity congress; Dat Nguyen, Haniyah Lutfi, and Alan Parra took the top three spots in varsity congress, respectively; Gabrielle Brown and Ai Tran won second place in policy debate; Team LASER (Leah Ghebrelul, Abigail Nguyen, Sarah Abi Saab, and Erica Carranza) took first place in varsity world schools debate; and Victoria Pacheco, Gerardo Diaz, Syed Ali, Preston Nguyen, and Sophia Ghebrelul took third place. With world school teams and congressional debaters eligible to compete at the city tournament, competitors can qualify for nationals.

All of these debaters were competing in varsity congress. “For my city qualifiers tournament, I found it very fun and unique from others. I think that CASE tournaments allowed for all the congressional debaters to bond with eachother, and so rather than feeling you did bad after rounds, you felt like you had a group supporting your back! Overall it was very fun,” Nguyen said.
