Speech and Debate Holds General Meeting

Eager Faces Victoria Pacheco shares general news to debate members during an afterschool meeting on Wednesday, October 16. With the first CASE tournament of the year happening in 3 days, debaters were excited to begin preparation. “I’m nervous to try new speaker position,” debater Abigail Nguyen said.

On Wednesday, October 16, Speech and Debate held an after school meeting in the debate room to prepare for the first CASE tournament of the year. With the competition soon approaching on Saturday, October 21, members gathered in small groups and focused on refining their cases and strategies. In seminar room 531, World Schools novice debaters worked diligently on their argument structures with the help of experienced members. Moreover, extemporaneous speakers gave practice speeches to debate coach Derek Davis in the debate room. As the meeting wrapped up at around 4 PM, members prepared to return after school on Thursday for mock rounds.

Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy Prepares for Service Project
Keeping Things in Check: Volunteers Nhi Le and Phat Luong sit outside of the gym. They make sure that donors sign in and fill out the questionnaire beforing entering. "It was fun volunteering," Le said.
NHS Hosts Annual Blood Drive
A Perfect Performance: Meerab Arif and Georgio Tahtouh host before each performance. They ask questions about different cultures and provide information about the next performance. "I wanted to give people a space where they feel seen, and that's exactly what the multicultural dance show is about," Arif said.
Desi Club Hosts Multicultural Dance Show
Dat Nguyen, Haniyah Lutfi, and Alan Parra pose with their first, second, and third place trophies at City Qualifiers. All of these debaters were competing in varsity congress. "For my city qualifiers tournament, I found it very fun and unique from others. I think that CASE tournaments allowed for all the congressional debaters to bond with eachother, and so rather than feeling you did bad after rounds, you felt like you had a group supporting your back! Overall it was very fun," Nguyen said.
