Speech and Debate Wins at Springwoods Memorial Tournament

Beaming Smiles Abigail Nguyen, Sarah Abi Saab, and Esai Moreno pose for a picture after advancing to semifinals in the Springwood Memorial Swing tournament. With only a few minutes till the next round, they enjoyed themselves with a last minute UNO match. “I wasn’t able to compete both days, but the time I was there was fun,” Nguyen said.

The Springwood Memorial Speech and Debate Tournament, held September 27 to 28, was a swing tournament, combining two competitions in one weekend. On day one, Nyla Whiteside took 1 place in Congressional Debate in the Springwood tournament, and on day two, she placed 10 in the Memorial tournament. In Worlds Schools Debate, team AK15 (Syed Ali, Gerardo Diaz, Preston Nguyen, and Victoria Pacheco) advanced to quarterfinals. Team LASER (Sarah Abi Saab, Erica Carranza, Leah Ghebrelul, Esai Moreno, and Abigail Nguyen) placed 1 overall, with over half the team now qualified for the state level. With the next tournament approaching on October 9, debaters continue preparing cases with their team members.

Members are required to log weekly tutoring sessions to maintain active status in the club. “This helps us track our hours and stay committed," Princess Eche said.
Math Club Prepares for Competitions
Perfecting the Notes: Clarinet players Ifetayo Taiwo and Taylor Nguyen practice ahead of their Honor Band auditions. They dedicated hours of preparation on their clarinet pieces to ensure their performances stood out. “It’s an intense process, but I think it’s worth it to make it,” Taiwo said.

Sign Up! Khavian Nguyen signs in at Mu Alpha Theta’s third meeting of the year. She was eager to learn more about next week’s induction event. "I love math—it’s something I even do for fun in my free time," Nguyen said.

New Club Alert! Myua Truong, Khoi Nguyen, and Bao Quan Ho proudly introduce their new club, VSA (Vietnamese Student Association). They designed a poster featuring intricate Asian heritage details. "This is going to be such a fun club—I’m really excited for it to begin," Truong said.
