Safari yearbook and Kerronicle newspaper took home over 50 awards this weekend at the Interscholastic League Press Conference spring convention.
The event, hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, includes workshops, on-site contests, and presentation of the Individual Achievement Awards for photos, stories and designs published in newspapers and yearbooks.
In the print newspaper 4A-1 division, Kerronicle earned 22 IAAs, including the following:
- first place in student art for Ayesha Malik;
- first place in headlines for the staff;
- first place in editorial cartoon for Tuong Phi Le;
- second place in personal opinion column for Nadia Zulfa;
- second place in general news photo for Durand Nguyen;
- third place in editorial writing for Huy Phil Pham;
- third place in photo story for Aja Bryant, Alyssa Andeverde and Durand Nguyen;
- third place in in-depth news feature story for Jason Nguyen;
- third place in in-depth news feature package for Joanna Arias, Tuong Phi Le, Jesus Escobar, Tracey Le and Kelli Chow;
- third place in double-truck design for Arias;
- third place in editorial cartoon for Tuong Phi Le;
- third place in captions for Bryant, D. Nguyen and Andeverde;
- third place in feature photo for Emily Tran;
- honorable mention in newswriting for Andeverde and Tracey Le;
- honorable mention in sports feature for Tuong Phi Le;
- honorable mention in sports feature for Hadiqa Memon;

- second place in news feature for Tuong Phi Le;

- third place in photo story for Bryant, D. Nguyen and Andeverde;
- third place in multimedia presentation for Rebecca Negri;

In the 2011 yearbook 4A-1 division, Safari staffers earned 13 IAAs:

- second place in club spread for Tran, Sue Tecson and Sara Mostafiz;

- honorable mention in student life photo for Christina Huynh;

In the current yearbook (2012) 4A-1 competition, Safari brought home IAAs in four out of five categories:
- third place in student life spread for Norton, Fredy Lopez and Samantha Sbeiti;
- third place in sports spread for Lopez, Sbeiti, Negri, Cindy Lei and Irene Islam;
- honorable mention in academic spread for Tecson, Lei and Sarah Bungay;
- honorable mention in club spread for Tecson, Lopez and Bungay.
The publications will receive the overall newspaper and yearbook ratings at Sunday’s awards ceremony.
