Owl City vanished from the music world ever since the release of its number one single, “Fireflies” on July 14, 2009, but now it returns with another hit, “Good Time” featuring Canadian star Carly Rae Jepsen of “Call Me Maybe.” This song is featured in Owl City’s newest album, The Midsummer Station released on August 12.
The album consists of 11 tracks and features Jepsen and Mark Hoppus as guests with lead singer Adam Young. This album sounds like every other cliché pop album. All of the tracks sound the same–they have the same rhythm and beat, but just with different words.
“Good Time,” an upbeat, overly positive, summery song, sounds like any other pop tune produced to hit the radio. Although it isn’t unique, the mood and style is enough to attract young teenagers ready to have a “good time.”
Along with the other motivational and sweet tunes, “Shooting Star” stands out because of its calming effect. It contains a slight resemblance to the rhythm of “Fireflies” but since it doesn’t have auto tune, the song is more enjoyable. The lyrics are inspiring. For example, “All this gravity will try to pull you down, but not this time/When the sun goes down, and the lights burn out, then it’s time for you to shine.”
I’d rate the overall album a four out of 10 because of the similarity of sound effects. For individual tracks, I’d rate it a seven. If you listen to each song individually, you will appreciate the lyrics. However, I’d advise you to not spend money on the album. Due to the overly sweet and happy resonance of this album, if I was sad it would make me sadder. If I was happy, it would make me happier. So listen at your own risk .
